Torus

'The bubble is a symbol for our own universe, in which we are forever enclosed, shaping our perception, identity and self through a process of reliving memories we have made.'

Fredrik Tjærandsen's BA collection blew up the moment it hit the Central Saint Martins graduate catwalk in June 2019 - his inflatable designs became instant internet hits. Nick Knight teamed up with Tjærandsen and choreographer Wayne McGregor for a two-day live streamed shoot and fashion film. Also included in the project are interviews and conversations with Tjærandsen and McGregor, on their creative processes and meditations on living systems.

Although this project took place before COVID-19 took hold, the ideas of human connection which underpin TORUS couldn't be more relevant. The symbiotic relationship between wearer and bubble is just as important for the designer as how an outside viewer relates to the bubble and the person within it. Tjærandsen offers the bubbles as a way to understand ourselves and the world around us, supporting our fundamental human endeavours to find alternate ways to connect with one another in the most isolated of times.
